Overview

Why Georgia is South Asia's Fastest-Growing MBBS Destination

Medical university campus, Georgia

Georgia — a progressive nation bridging Eastern Europe and Western Asia — has become the top-growth MBBS destination for Indian, Nepali, and Bangladeshi students. The country offers a WHO and NMC-approved medical degree, delivered entirely in English, under the European Bologna education framework.

According to data from India's Ministry of External Affairs and the National Statistics Office of Georgia (2024–25), over 15,000 Indian students are enrolled in Georgian universities, with 85–90% in the MD (MBBS-equivalent) program.

That's a 400%+ growth since 2019. The degree qualifies graduates for NExT (India), PLAB (UK), USMLE (USA), and Gulf licensing exams.

Recognised by: WHO (WDOMS) · NMC India · NCEQE (Georgia) · WFME-aligned pathways — enabling FMGE/NExT (India), USMLE (USA), PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia) when individual requirements are met.

What Students Worry AboutGeorgiaAnd Exactly How Taksheela Solves It

Every real concern, addressed honestly. No sugar-coating.

⚠️ Common Pain Points

Will my degree be valid in India?

Students fear spending 6 years and ₹40L+ only to find their degree isn't accepted by NMC.

My NEET score is low — will I still get in?

Students with scores under 350 assume MBBS abroad is out of reach.

How do I know the agent isn't misleading me?

Fraud agents recommend non-NMC universities and collect commissions from universities regardless of student outcomes.

Is Georgia safe for my daughter studying alone?

Parents are concerned about safety, cultural adjustment, and lack of support systems for female students.

Will I get Indian food? Can I follow my diet?

Students and families worry about dietary adjustments, especially vegetarians and those with religious dietary needs.

Can I get an education loan for Georgia?

Students ask about vegetarian/halal food, safety in Tbilisi, and how quickly they will feel at home away from India.

Honest assessment

Things to Consider Before Choosing Georgia

Genuine advantages and real challenges — so you make a fully informed decision. Taksheela believes honesty builds better outcomes than sales pitches.

Strong Advantages

  • Fees 3–5× lower than Indian private medical colleges, with zero capitation or donation requirements at any private Georgian university.
  • No donation, no management quota — merit-based admission at all NMC-approved private Georgian universities.
  • 100% English medium. No separate language exam. No IELTS or TOEFL. Just your NEET qualifying score.
  • European Bologna Process compliance — 360 ECTS credits, globally portable degree.
  • 16,000+ Indian students already enrolled — established peer communities, senior mentors, and Indian food in Tbilisi.
  • Safety — Georgia ranks top 20 globally in safety indices. Tbilisi is student-friendly and well-policed.
  • Public universities no longer accept international MBBS students — all seats at regulated private universities, reducing fraud risk.

Genuine Challenges

  • Georgian winters (December–February) in Tbilisi can dip to -2°C. Students from tropical climates need significant clothing investment and an adjustment period of 2–4 weeks.
  • Basic Georgian language is strongly advisable for patient communication during clinical rotations — though all academic instruction is in English.
  • No cadaver dissection at some universities — simulation-based anatomy training replaces this, but students should confirm the lab setup before enrolling.
  • NExT preparation requires disciplined self-study alongside coursework. Georgia's clinical exposure is good, but NExT coaching must be pursued proactively.
  • No Indian Embassy directly in Georgia (the Embassy of India in Tbilisi now operates directly — verify current status before departure).
  • Currency exchange risk — fees are in USD; families should plan for exchange rate fluctuations across the 6-year program.

Regulatory framework

NMC Gazette Rules & Georgia Compliance

These are the rules that determine whether your Georgian MBBS degree allows you to practise medicine in India. All Taksheela-recommended universities comply with all 6 rules.

Rule 1 — Minimum 54 Months

The programme must include at least 54 months of full-time medical education, excluding the 12-month internship. All Georgian private universities run a 5-academic-year + 1-internship programme.

Rule 2 — 12-Month Internship

A compulsory 12-month internship must be completed at the same institution or its affiliated teaching hospitals in Georgia before returning to India.

Rule 3 — English Medium

The entire MBBS course must be delivered in English for the full duration. Georgian private universities are among the few MBBS abroad destinations where this is comprehensively met.

Rule 4 — Valid Degree for Local Practice

Graduates must receive a degree that grants the right to practise medicine in Georgia. All NMC-listed Georgian universities satisfy this condition, making graduates eligible for NExT in India.

Rule 5 — NEET Mandatory

All Indian students must have a valid NEET-UG qualifying score at the time of admission to a foreign medical college. Score validity: 3 years from result date.

Rule 6 — WHO / WDOMS Listing

The university must be listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). Taksheela shortlists only institutions confirmed in the WDOMS directory and current NMC approved list.

Climate in Tbilisi

Four distinct seasons — plan layers for cold winters, mild springs and autumns, and hot dry summers in the capital.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

28–35°C — Hot, sunny, and dry. Very pleasant for outdoor exploration.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)

12–22°C — Ideal weather. Admission season. Excellent for settling in.

Winter (Dec–Feb)

-2 to 8°C — Cold, occasional snow in Jan. Heavy jackets and thermals essential.

Spring (Mar–May)

10–20°C — Beautiful season. Blooming city. Most students’ favourite time.

Taksheela Tip

Pack thermals, a quality winter jacket, and waterproof boots before departure. Most hostels have central heating, but the streets can be very cold from late October. Our pre-departure checklist covers everything.

Stories from Our Students in Georgia

When private college quotes were ₹90 lakhs with donation, I was completely lost. Taksheela showed me Georgia — two years in, I can confidently say it was the right call. GAU has modern labs, full English classes, and senior students who genuinely help you settle in.

Ravi Sharma

NEET 285 · Georgian American University | Patna, Bihar

As a Nepali student, I wasn't sure if Georgia was even an option. Taksheela clarified everything — visa, eligibility, which universities accept Nepali students. The clinical exposure in Year 1 surprised me — we started observing hospital cases much earlier than expected.

Priya Gurung

Geomedi Medical University | Dharan, Nepal

EEU has been great. The faculty is excellent and there are hundreds of Bangladeshi students here already — settling in was easy. Taksheela did something different — they showed me the NMC approval list in writing. No vague promises, just facts.

Frequently asked Questions

Yes — provided you study at an NMC-approved Georgian university, complete the full 6-year program (including the mandatory 12-month clinical internship in Georgia), and subsequently clear India's NExT (National Exit Test). After NExT, you must complete a 12-month internship at an NMC-recognised hospital in India before obtaining State Medical Council registration. Taksheela only recommends NMC-approved institutions.

Yes, for Indian students who intend to return and practise medicine in India. As per NMC regulations (effective 2019), a valid NEET-UG qualifying score (within its 3-year validity) is mandatory before admission to any foreign medical university. Georgian universities do not set a minimum NEET percentile or score — only that you have qualified. Nepali and Bangladeshi students should confirm equivalent requirements with Taksheela.

Total 6-year all-inclusive cost: INR: ₹39–70 lakhs (tuition + hostel + food + insurance + visa + personal expenses). Nepal NPR: approximately NPR 62–112 lakh (₹ × ~1.6). Bangladesh BDT: approximately BDT 53–95 lakh (₹ × ~1.35). Budget university (like CIU at $2,200/year): total around ₹25–35L all-in. Premium institutions (around $6,000–6,200/year): total ₹50–70L all-in. No capitation. No donation. Zero hidden fees.

Absolutely. Georgian universities welcome students of all nationalities. Nepali students must show their NEB certificate or A-Level equivalent, and Bangladeshi students must show their HSC certificate with DGME compliance. Both nationalities require a Georgian student visa and must meet individual university eligibility criteria. Taksheela has dedicated counsellors for Nepal and Bangladesh who understand the specific visa, documentation, and licensing pathways for each country.

Top Taksheela-recommended NMC-compliant universities: (1) Georgian American University (GAU, est. 2001), (2) Georgian National University SEU (est. 2001), (3) Geomedi Medical University (est. 1998), (4) East European University (est. 2012), (5) University of Georgia (est. 2004), (6) Caucasus International University (est. 1995 — most affordable), (7) International Black Sea University (est. 1995), (8) David Tvildiani Medical University (est. 1992), (9) Ilia State University (est. 2006), (10) Ken Walker International University (est. 2019). All are WHO-listed, NMC-compliant, and NCEQE-accredited.

Georgia has three key advantages over most alternatives: (1) 100% English medium — unlike Russia or Kyrgyzstan where a second language is required for clinical years. (2) European Bologna Process alignment — making the degree more globally portable. (3) Warmer climate than Russia or Kyrgyzstan, with better cultural adjustment for South Asian students. Fees are slightly higher than Russia's budget options but comparable to mid-range Russian universities. Compared to Bangladesh, Georgia offers more English-medium university options and a larger Indian student community. The right choice depends on your budget, career goals, and personal preferences — Taksheela provides personalised advice based on your specific profile.

NExT (National Exit Test) has replaced the old FMGE for all Indian medical graduates returning from abroad (and for Indian graduates too). It is a two-part exam conducted by the NMC: NExT Step 1 (knowledge-based) and NExT Step 2 (clinical skills). Passing NExT is mandatory for Georgian MBBS graduates who want to practise medicine in India or pursue PG admissions. Unlike the old FMGE, NExT applies to all MBBS graduates — not just foreign graduates. Taksheela provides early NExT orientation to students from Year 1.

The mandatory 12-month clinical rotation (internship) must be completed in Georgia at the affiliated teaching hospital, as per NMC regulations. This is a non-negotiable requirement. After completing this and returning to India, graduates must complete a separate 12-month internship at an NMC-recognised hospital in India before obtaining permanent medical registration. This two-internship pathway is clearly stipulated in the NMC Gazette.

Yes. Georgia consistently ranks among the world's top 20 safest countries. Tbilisi has a strong police presence, very low violent crime rates, and an extremely welcoming culture towards international students. Most universities offer on-campus hostels with 24-hour security and CCTV coverage. Additionally, the large Indian student community (13,000+) means there are always senior students available to guide and support newcomers, including female students living independently for the first time. Taksheela's Tbilisi team provides year-round local support.

For September 2025 intake: begin the counselling and university shortlisting process by March–April 2025. Applications should be submitted by June–July 2025. Admission letters are typically issued by July–August. Visa processing takes 4–6 weeks, so applications should be submitted by August at the latest. Taksheela strongly recommends starting by April to ensure MEA apostille (2–4 weeks), university application, and visa processing all align without deadline pressure. Contact Taksheela now to check seat availability.

Visit the official NMC website at nmc.org.in and check the published list of approved foreign medical universities. Also verify the university on the WHO's World Directory of Medical Schools at wdoms.org. Taksheela conducts this verification in real time before every shortlisting and shares the official NMC document with every student — so you never rely solely on our word. Never pay any fee to a university without independently verifying its NMC status first.

Yes — several routes exist. University merit scholarships (10–25% fee waiver for strong academic profiles), the Government of India's Central Sector Interest Subsidy (CSIS) scheme for EWS students, the Padho Pardesh Scheme for minority community students, and limited Georgian government scholarships via NCEQE. Taksheela identifies which schemes you are eligible for and assists with application documentation. Scholarship availability and seat quotas change yearly — always verify deadlines with the issuing body.
